EU Transport GHG: Routes to 2050

global-logo“EU Transport GHG: Routes to 2050” serves the European Commission’s long-term objective of tackling climate change, which entails limiting global warming to 2oC, and includes the definition of a strategic target for 2050.

As far as transport is concerned, there are various innovative policy measures that are targeted at controlling emissions from the transport sector, but these measures are not part of a broad strategy or overarching goal. Hence, the key objective of this project is to provide guidance and evidence on the broader policy framework for controlling GHG emissions from the transport sector.

Using a pro-active engagement of European stakeholders and experts, the “EU Transport GHG: Routes to 2050” project aims at answering the following questions:

  • Transport trends and drivers: How is transport demand influenced by the wider economy and wider trends?
  • What level of GHG emissions from the transport sector would be likely to be compatible with the EU’s long term GHG reduction goals? What is the optimal timing for actions to achieve these?
  • How much GHG emission reduction is technology likely to be able to deliver and what other actions will be needed? What will the overall costs to society be for these actions?
  • How can likely changes in transport type and structure affect the sector’s GHG emissions?
  • What policy framework is needed over the short, medium and longer term to ensure the compatibility of EU transport sector emissions with long term climate goals?

The project also developed an illustrative scenarios tool, to help provide indicative estimates of the possible impacts of policy on transport in the EU (primarily energy use and GHG emissions, costs, energy security, NOx and PM emissions).
