Policy Mechanisms for Sustainability: Exploring Scenario and Storyline Building Techniques for Sustainable Urbanisation - The Case of China in 2050In a world of consumption-led growth and seemingly unstoppable urbanisation, how do we ensure that the cities of the future are sustainable, livable and socially inclusive?

This is what two recent papers from URBACHINA, the EU-funded research project that focused on sustainable urbanization in China, seek to answer.

The first, Building Scenarios for Sustainable Urbanisation: Balancing ‘Can’, ‘Need’, and ‘Want’, discusses the complex issues faced as cities expand and the ecological and human costs of building mega-cities without envisioning the future and creating a long-term strategy.

The second, Policy Mechanisms for Sustainability: Exploring Scenario and Storyline Building Techniques for Sustainable Urbanisation – The Case of China in 2050 (pictured to the left), is a policy brief that came out of the project’s scenario-building exercise. It offers decision-makers practical advice on how to encourage ecologically, economically and socially responsible cities.
